The secrets hidden in the Vinland Map (image) are many. Hopefully you have had time to discover Oystein’s signature and make your own Hudson Bay map.

There are just a couple more interesting pictures to show. Thanks to Photoshop the reader need not strain his eyes to see the Squirrel and Bird hidden in the map. There is one other creature to be found but that is up to the reader. It is a Bear.

The Bird

The Squirrel

The three animals are part of the story. It is the Bird that has the most significance though. In the story, it is a Jay. In real life, Oystein Magnusson took on many personas. He also acquired an alias. The bird represents that alias. It is one we still know today.

Sigurd described him in his later years. Historian Snorri relates that Sigurd complained that ‘some dark force had taken over Norway.’ Indeed, it might be said that when you have an enemy as brilliant as Oystein it is best to keep him in plain sight, like on a throne. The last thing one should do is fail to assassinate him and be duped into thinking one had succeeded. In so doing, Sigurd created a true enemy. So in the end, the map is indeed a very real treasure map.

And to the reader who hopes there might be more to be found, it is strongly suggested that one peruse ever so carefully the two books linked below.

The Vinland Map Cipher is the anagram study of the map.

A narrative version of King Oystein’s life based on the ciphers and historical records.

The Vinland Map Cipher Addendum is a pdf of images that may not be included in the two books.

Enjoy. Enjoy. Enjoy. And may your travels be safe and bear fruit!

The Vinland Map: Anagrams and… – Part III

B.L. Freeborn © December 2025

This is a continuation of the previous two posts. If you have not read them, you might want to start at this link.

Vinland Map. Photo by Yale Univversity.

In the last two posts about The Vinland Map (see image) many places were found, the signature of the author OM was located and a construction line was found. With numerous other anagrams within the legends OM indicates map assembly instructions.

This map was found bound in a book about Tartars, hence the name, ‘The Vinland Map and the Tartar Relation.’ One may presume this is because several of the legends have the root word Tartar. However, one might want to notice this is an anagram of ‘art art.’ For example: Magnum mare Tartarorum is an anagram of MAN RAT RUMMAGE RUM MOR or ‘Man rat rummage room more.’

Magnum mare Tartarorum is also an anagram of:

NEG ART MAR U M ……. Negative art mar cup M
O                                    ……. O
ART MAR U M           ……. Art mar cup M.

This suggests a mirror image is to be used to create not only the M but the ‘mar cup.’ So what or where is the ‘mar cup’?

Let us proceed to make the real map and perhaps this question will be answered. You will need three copies each of the original and mirror versions.

Next there are two other lines that must be found besides the Apusia/Maori. These are the A lines. One runs through Alexandria and the other through Samaca. Both names have three A’s. Samaca is an anagram of MACS AA or ‘Makes AA.’ Similarly, Alexandria is an anagram of DRA LINE X AA or ‘Draw line across AA.’ Once these two lines are found the map needs to be folded so the lines are brought together. Further study reveals this needs to be done with a mirror image map.

Three lines are used to construct the hidden map.

Use mirror image copy and fold together on A-A lines.

Three fold lines have been found. One should also notice a few other map creation guides. On the upper right there is a point that sticks out. On the lower left there is an indent into which this can fit snugly. It is a tab and slot. There are two other tab/slots. The hook to the left of Norway, modern Denmark, is one and its slot is the indent below Imperiu Basora (the top of the M) on the far lower right. The top of the M will also be used to rest on the west coast of Africa where it fits very nicely. The point that sticks out and its mirror are another joining point. The assembly is as shown below.

Points that kiss to join copy and mirror image.

Tabs and slots used to join copies to make final map.

Lower round. Cut at Apusia/Maori line.

Two such portions, one in mirror, are joined to form a smooth curve.

Two copies kiss at tag points.

The final result will be exactly what is hinted at by two copies, one in mirror, that kiss at the tag points.  Alternatively, hold a map folded along that point against a mirror and see two perfect arcs meeting. Two large arcs meeting in this manner are a notable feature at one place on Earth.

This portion of the map is used to create another section. Two copies needed.

They join as shown using the indents where the points fit. The top portion meets at the ‘Thule Ultima’ legend.

Now enough is known to assemble the complete map using the six copies.

The whole map assembled from six maps.

The Map is the outline of the assembled maps. It is Hudson Bay.

Actual map of Hudson Bay for comparison.

This is none other than a complete map of Hudson Bay which would be the ‘mar cup’, O-den or just plain O for short. It is also referred to as RI. This notation is because the R letter’s numerical equivalent in Futhark is five and I is to be seen as a stroke or one. What significance is there to 5, 1 or 51? The latitude of Greenwich England from which longitude begins is 51. Moreover, 5+1 is 6 and so it says 56. At latitude 56 one finds Belcher Island in the perfect arc at the southern end of Hudson Bay. This is supposed to be the old  location of magnetic north or RI as in ‘are eye.’

The implication is that the entire bay was mapped during the early 1100’s. If OM, King Oystein Magnusson, created this map then it was done prior to 1123 when he passed.

So sad. The nay sayers are still neighing. There is one more post with hidden images and ….. something else. Regardless, one might clearly say this is a true treasure map.

To be concluded in next post!    Previous PostNext Post

The Vinland Map: Hidden Secrets – Part II

B.L. Freeborn © December 2025

This is a continuation of the previous post. If you have not read it, you may want to at this link.

The secrets hidden in the Vinland Map (image) are many. Hopefully you have had time to discover Oystein’s signature. Just in case you have not, it is shown at the end of this post.

Now you should be able to surmise two things. Some things on this map are shown with incredible accuracy and other things are laughable. Having found OM you know why.

What is superbly depicted on this strange map? Obviously, the depiction of Greenland is near perfect. How about the entire eastern seaboard from New Foundland to Cuba? How about the depiction of the Mississippi River? Then there is the depiction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. There is even a lovely picture of Niagara Falls in the 12th century before Goat Island was separated from the shore. OM or more properly, King Oystein Magnusson, included his beloved lake in Scotland where he was born. He also hinted at the location of his son’s grave and the monument he placed on it. This is the Rök rune stone in Sweden. There is also a rudimentary and awful depiction of Hudson Bay in a tiny Vinland in the upper left corner.

It is almost as if it was designed so that when King Sigurd’s spies got their hands on it, Sigurd would be gravely disappointed. The only thing to be plundered was a large island of ice. He would not be able to see an entire continent was up for grabs and all the murdering he could do. That would wait until Columbus.

The nay sayers will not be deterred though. To them this map is still a fake. There must be more here or they will have their way and what a tragic loss that would be. There is more. As said before, it is a virtual treasure map.

Here is the next task. Find the extra fold line. Now one must ask why would someone make a beautiful and perfect copy of a map to pass off as an antiquity and make oodles of money but ruin it by folding it where there was no obvious reason or need?!?

Stranger still they had the foresight to fold it in the right place to see… Yes. What else is there to see? Where is this line?

Find the line first. It is just to the left of the fold/damage line running through the first letters of ‘Apusia’ and ‘Maori.’ The first is supposed to refer to Prussia and the second was never fixed to a location. One should be able to see immediately that an anagram begins: ‘A map …usia ori.’ If one looks at this long enough, with the hundreds of other anagrams to be found, one realizes it says ‘A map (of) O. Use IA (for) RI.’ The IA refers to the last letters of the words Apusia and Maori and RI to the place to be depicted.

Fold line on map through Apusia and Maori.

There are other anagrams to be found in these few letters but they do not produce like some of the other legends. In the letters of Greenland, spelled as Gronelada, there are more than thirty in basic Anglo-Saxon words. That is another point to note. We may hazard to guess that Oystein used basic English because he was sure Sigurd and friends would not be able to read it.

So, the fold line that appears through the two words is misplaced by a quarter inch. When the actual map is assembled this does not seem to make that big of a difference.
